VANCOUVER, Wash. - Winning its fourth match in as many days, the Whitman College women's tennis team rolled over Hardin-Simmons from Abilene, Texas, 8-1 Monday afternoon at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.
Whitman, now 7-4 on the season, played three Northwest Conference matches in western Oregon over the weekend and then stayed in the area to battle Hardin-Simmons, which is starting a Spring Break trip.
"We played really well in doubles and that carried over into doubles," Whitman coach John Hein said. "We had a lot of fun today and played well as a team."
Whitman, just now starting a two-week spring break, is off the rest of this week before heading to California next week for four matches.
Senior Elise Otto and junior Alyssa Roberg led the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory over Lisa Mertz and Jennifer Cheung.
Junior Emily Rolston and sophomore Kate Kunkel-Patterson cruised to an 8-3 victory over Lauren Jay and Genene Haddad at No. 2 doubles, and junior Lizzy Schiller and first-year doubles partner Hannah Palkowitz beat Angie Nhan and Alex Ortiz 8-5 at No. 3.
The day's most competitive match in singles came at No. 5, where Schiller outlasted Haddad 7-5, 2-6, 10-8.
In the top two matches, Roberg downed Mertz 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 while Otto bested Jay 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.
Whitman also got straight set wins from Kunkel-Patterson at No. 4 and from Palkowitz at No. 6.
Hardin-Simmons, now 6-3 on the season, got its lone team point from Cheung, who scored a 6-3, 6-1 win over Rolston at No. 3.
Whitman's next match is Monday against Maryland's Salisbury University in Claremont, Calif.
