WALLA WALLA -- Jim Andrews, owner of The Auto Man car repair business, is continuing in his battle against bone marrow cancer.

Andrews was diagnosed in May, although he had symptoms for nearly a year before. A U-B story in December noted Andrews was scheduled to undergo a stem-cell transplant in Seattle. The procedure is not a cure but can extend the life of those with the disease by years or decades.

That transplant was finally accomplished March 1, explained Jim's wife, Debora Andrews.

However, complications and infection have set in and Jim is once again hospitalized. The family's stay in Seattle is at likely to last another six weeks, Debora noted.

Health insurance does not cover motel, transportation, parking and other costs associated with getting treatment away from home. A fund for helping with those costs has been established at Banner Bank. Donations can be made at any branch.

The Andrewses, who initially balked at asking for outside support, are grateful for the help this community has given them, Debora added.
