Mae Battle of Milton-Freewater passed away March 5, 2011, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla at the age of 85 years. There will be a gathering for family and friends and potluck dinner Saturday, March 19, at noon at 83926 Prunedale Road, Milton-Freewater. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society through the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.
Mrs. Battle was born June 28, 1925, in Wakefield, Kan., the daughter of William E. and Anna Mae Humbert Kerby. She grew up in Manhattan and St. George, Kan. At the age of 16 she moved to Los Angeles. She worked in a garment factory as well as being a homemaker. One of the activities she enjoyed was Powder Puff Car racing. On May 27, 1963, she married Jay H. Battle in Las Vegas, Nev. The couple moved to Milton-Freewater in 1998. Mrs. Battle enjoyed all kinds of sports, yard work, gardening and fishing. Mr. Battle preceded her in death Nov. 10, 2010.
She is survived by a son, Rodney Gilchrist of Milton-Freewater; a brother, Ron Kirby of Milton-Freewater; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Battle was preceded in death by a son, Perry Gilchrist; a daughter, JoAnne Lieming; and a great-grandson, Tony Gilchrist.
