Grangeville picks up opening win over Pomeroy baseball team

POMEROY - Pomeroy lost its opening-round baseball game to Grangeville, 11-3, Thursday afternoon.

The Pirates scored three times off four hits, but made four errors in the effort.

"The weather hasn't been real good to get a lot of practice in, but it hasn't been for them, either," said Pomeroy coach Dave Boyer.

But with a young team - five of his 15 players are eighth graders - he was pleased with the effort.

"We made a few mistakes and that's what the first few games of the season are for," he said. "We can make those mistakes, learn from them and go on, and hopefully not make them again."

Nick Tewalt had Pomeroy's only RBI on the night with a sacrifice.

"Our hitting was a little weak but not bad overall, especially considering that Grangeville's quite a bit bigger than we are," Boyer said.

Although it was supposed to be a doubleheader, the second game was called after the second inning because of darkness.

The Pirates travel to Asotin's JV Monday seeking their first win in the young season.
