MILTON-FREEWATER -- Lady Max is back home.

Stranded on a small island in the Walla Walla River since Wednesday morning, the 32-year old Appaloosa mare was led back to safety Thursday afternoon.

Aided by a group of friends, Lady's owner, Del Henry, built a wooden ramp to bridge the gap between the riverbank and the island. "They had the bridge built in about 30 minutes and she came right across," said Lindsey Henry, Del's wife.

Del Henry said the horse most likely slipped off the bank and swam to the island. She was unable to return to her pasture because of the fast current and the high bank, which had been cut away by the river's flow.

The Henrys were able to get hay to the horse during her time on the island and a friend waded across to the island Thursday afternoon to check on the horse as well.
