ATHENA - Weston-McEwen picked up a 15-14 home win in an offensive softball battle with Waitsburg-Prescott on a blustery Thursday afternoon.
Molly vonBorstel pitched the complete-game effort for the TigerScots, allowing 11 hits.
"The temperature dropped by the time we really got started," said W-M coach Jeff Griggs. "We struggled a little."
It was vonBorstel's first varsity start. The freshman had expected to play in a JV game today.
"We're really proud of her to go out and go the distance, on short notice. She got thrown into varsity," Griggs said.
The TigerScots managed 14 hits on the day.
They opened with a 12-run second inning, but W-P's seven in the top of the fifth kept it close.
Morgan Entze had two hits and four RBI, and Joshlynn Killgore was 4-for-4.
"As a whole, we had several younger kids playing in the game without any real varsity experience, so it was a good outing," Griggs said.
Weston-McEwen had five errors to W-P's four. Griggs said weather and wind was a factor.
The first-game win moves the TigerScots to 1-0 on the season.
"We need to clean up the game quite a bit, but it was a typical first game," he said.
The TigerScots travel to Riverside for a tournament Monday and Tuesday. They playe Clatskanie at 12:30 p.m. Monday.
