W-P softball pitches to sweep of St. John-Endicott

PRESCOTT - Jennifer Nichols and Kazmira Grende pitched Waitsburg-Prescott to a sweep of a non-league softball doubleheader here Saturday.

Nichols struck out 10 and pitched a complete-game one hitter to lead W-P to a 7-0 win over St. John-Endicott in the opener.

Grende came back with a five strike-out, one-hit performance in the night cap as W-P completed the sweep with an 8-0 win.

"They (St. J-E) put the ball in play," W-P coach Angie Potts said. "We played solid defense behind them (Nichols and Grende)."

Hailey Goenen ignited the offense in both games for W-P. Goenen hit a solo home run in the first inning of the opener to get W-P off on the right foot. Goenen hit a two-run shot to break up a scoreless tie in the third inning of the second game.

"Hailey hits the ball pretty well and is pretty quick," Potts said. "What might be a double or triple for someone else, turns into a home run for her."

Alyssa Hafen, Megan Withers, Dionna Baker and Taylor Moon all collected hits in W-P's 7-0 opening win.

Goenen and Katy Hoefer each rapped out two hits in the 8-0 second game win to spark W-P's 10-hit attack.

W-P improves to 2-1 on the season and opens league play Saturday at Asotin.

"I'm pretty happy with the way we are playing," Potts said. "Things look pretty good. We have to maintain our consistency and focus on the little things."
