WALLA WALLA - Four DeSales pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout as the Irish opened their 2011 baseball season with a 10-0 victory over visiting Lake Quinault at Ray Lane Field late Saturday afternoon.
Victor Mata pitched the first two innings of the five-inning affair, with Kyle Lindgren, Logan Hoeft and Garrett Leahy each pitching one inning. The foursome combined for nine strikeouts and issued just a pair of walks.
Junior Ochoa collected Lake Quinault's only hit.
DeSales struck for six runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of two walks and three hit batters. Brandon Arellano drove in a pair of runs with a single.
The Irish managed five hits in the game - Dan Solomon's double and singles by Arellano, Tim Caudill, Joe Duehn and Adam Eskil.
Lake Quinault was grateful for a game in dry conditions away from Amanda Park and its soggy environs, according to Irish coach Kim Cox.
"They are from the peninsula," Cox said of the Elk. "They are in a rain forest. It is not uncommon for them to get 10 feet of rain in a year. That means it is tough for them to get quality practice time in the spring.
"They are a little bit behind. They came over here to get in a couple of days of practices and a game, and our kids have a lot of respect for what they are up against."
DeSales travels to Hermiston Tuesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
