LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - Reduce recycling and garbage pickup

I remember when recycling was being discussed by the Walla Walla City Council. There was much discussion about the need for the 96-gallon containers.

The question was always why do we need two 96-gallon containers, one for garbage and one for recycling. The answer was that this enabled the same vehicle to pickup either container eliminating specialized vehicles for each pickup.

It was clear to everyone that if recycling was a goal, then it would take a while to fill up each container, and there would be less garbage, and a bit more recycling.

I don't think any letter writer has yet suggested we alternate the pickups of garbage and recycling -- pick each up every other week. I think this would solve a lot of problems. Less fuel would be used, a smaller fleet of trucks would be needed and the costs could be reduced.

Then the City Council can address the problem of why apartments can have garbage pickup but no recycling pickup.
