KENNEWICK - Wa-Hi kicked off its Columbia Basin softball season with a pair of victories over Southridge here Tuesday, 10-0 and 6-4.
Alyson Ambler went the distance in the circle for the Blue Devils in the opener, striking out 10 Suns batters while walking none, and gave up just two hits.
"Alyson was dominant, she looked really good," Wa-Hi coach Jerry Humphreys said. "The kids really swung the bat well in the first game."
The Blue Devils plated two runs in the first inning, and "that set the tone for that game," Humphreys said.
Libbie Jimenez had three hits for Wa-Hi in the opener, while TraeAnn Payne was 2-for-3, scored two runs and had three RBIs.
"She was on base every time," Humphreys said. "She did a great job at the plate and on the bases."
The Blue Devils opened the nightcap with a first-inning run, and put up three more in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.
"We played well in the first half, and then we hit a lull," Humphreys said. "Southridge took advantage of that and made it tight to the end."
The Suns scored once in the fourth, twice in the fifth and again in the sixth before Wa-Hi ended the game with a doubleplay. Southridge's cleanup hitter came to the plate with Suns runners at second and third, and the Suns trailing by two. She grounded to Wa-Hi shortstop Andrea Hamada, who whipped it to Ambler at first base. Ambler then threw to catcher Maddy Smyth, who put the tag on the Southridge runner at home for the final out of the game.
"It was a pretty exciting way to finish up," Humphreys said. "It's good to get the first games under our belt. It was a good outing."
