HERMISTON - DeSales' baseball team improved to 3-0 on the season with two victories over a Hermiston squad mixed with varsity and JV players here Tuesday, 12-0 and 17-3.
In the opener, Vic Mata struck out 10 and gave up only two hits through five innings of work on the mound.
Tim Caudill drove in three runs with a single and a double, and Kyle Lindgren also drove in three runs with a pair of doubles.
Logan Hoeft added a single and double and drove in two runs.
Vic had a good outing," Irish coach Kim Cox said. "He located very well. That is certainly a strength of his. It was good to see him be sharp early. The kids hit the ball well. We had several long doubles on the day so it was good to see some quality contact."
In the nightcap, Logan Hoeft, Lindgren, and Salmon Arellano combined for a three-hitter.
DeSales scored 14 runs in the first inning on several bases on balls and seven hits - including doubles by Travis Haen, Duehn, Hoeft and Darryl Galloway.
"The first inning was interesting to say the least," Cox said. "We got off to a good start when Travis Haen collected a double to start the game and Joe Duehn singled behind him. I was pleased with our defense throughout the day."
DeSales travels to Rosalia on Saturday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday against Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia.
