Weston-McEwen goes 1-3 at Riverside softball tourney

RIVERSIDE - Weston-McEwen picked up one win and lost three games in a softball tournament here Monday and Tuesday.

The TigerScots lost to Clatskanie, 2-0; La Grande, 6-5; and Willamina, 2-1.

La Grande is a Class 4A school and Clatskanie and Willamina are both 3A.

The TigerScots topped Riverside, another 3A school, 17-0, to close out the tournament.

"We fought some pretty tough competition, for the most part," said W-M coach Jeff Griggs. "We stayed in touch with all three teams in the games we lost. We were close, and we probably should've beaten La Grande."

Monday's eight-inning game with La Grande was the TigerScots' best opportunity to win. They charged to a 4-0 lead after five innings - but the Tigers bit back with five runs at the bottom of the fifth for a one-run lead.

Although the TigerScots put up another run in the seventh, it wasn't enough in the affair as the Tigers scored again in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

"I think this game highlighted that we had five errors, and it's a good reminder for us early in the season that we've got to clean up our game," said Griggs.

Morgan Entze was 3-for-5 at bat and hit a solo home run in the third inning. Haley Freske pitched the complete game, striking out eight batters in eight innings. None of La Grande's six runs were earned and she gave up no walks, Griggs said.

"She really pitched a good game," he said. "We could've won if we hadn't compounded their few successes with our errors."

In Monday's first game, the TigerScots were shut out by Clatskanie.

"We stranded six runners over the course of this game, which is something we definitely have to work on," Griggs said.

The closest opportunity they had to score was when Freske doubled with two outs and Riley Hill drew a walk.

But the next batter struck out in the pitcher's duel, ending the chance at a score.

"We had limited opportunities, and they had more contacts then we did," Griggs said. "And we had more errors. In a tight game, that's probably the difference."

The TigerScots made four errors against Clatskanie, which had just one.

Tuesday's second game against Willamina was also close.

"It's good to have the score be 2-1 this early in the season," Griggs said.

Willamina was up two as W-M came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. Entze tripled and Riley doubled her in for a 2-1 game, then Natalie Arnold singled to put runners on first and third with two outs.

But the next batter struck out.

"We started the sixth at the top of our batting order, which is where you want to be, but we got one run when we needed two," Griggs said.

W-M had another chance earlier in the game, when Willamina's field made some solid plays to keep W-M scoreless, he said.

The final game of the tournament was a five-inning, 10-run-rule-shortened match with Riverside. W-M put up 17 runs on two hits. Riverside tried three pitchers, but couldn't find the zone.

Entze opened scoring in the first inning with a two-RBI triple.

"It was a great way to kick off scoring because she found a pitch and hit it with runners on," Griggs said.

Carly Graves had the TigerScots' other hit on the night.

The three losses and win move the TigerScots to 2-3 overall. They travel to a Saturday tournament at Union, with Wallula at 10 a.m. and Union at 12:30.
