Irish golfers place second at match


KENNEWICK - Bryce Scott shot a medalist-winning 41 and teammate Brian Baumgart was close behind with a 43 here Wednesday as DeSales finished second in a four-school, 36-hole golf match at Canyon Lakes.

The Irish finished with a 192 total for their four best scores, 10 strokes behind Tri-Cities Prep's winning score of 182. Liberty Christian shot 217 for third place and Dayton was fourth with a 240 score.

Jerod Konen shot 48 for DeSales, Ben Wolpert carded 60 and Andrew Hayunga 73.

Scott Cole led the Jaguars with a 44, third-best overall.

Dain Henderson led Dayton with a 47, followed by Jaron Button with a score of 50, Andre Fayette 69 and Tim Ihle 74. Scott Cole's 48 led Liberty Christian while Waitsburg-Prescott's Dakota Baker, playing unattached, shot 46.

Tri-Cities Prep also won the girls match with a 168 total for its three best scores over 36 holes. Alexis Armijo led the way with a medalist-winning 52.

Ashton Montgomery and Kelly Martin shot a pair of 56s to lead DeSales, Alyssa Lyons followed with a 59 and Grace Burrows turned in an 84. The Irish wound up second in team scoring with a 171.

Dayton, which fielded the only other complete team, scored 197 and was led by Abby Chapman's 60. Molly Payne scored 67 and Kyla Ihle 70 for the Bulldogs.

Next up for the Irish is the first annual DeSales Wine Valley Invitational which will be played Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m. at the Wine Valley Golf Course. The same four schools are expected to attend.
