Blue Devil boys pound Pirates in Big Nine tennis action

Wa-Hi sophomore Josh Kuznetsov holds his racket firmly as he reaches for a return volley over the net during a doubles match with partner Blake Rowley against Davis.

WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi's boys tennis team defeated Davis, 6-1, here Thursday.

"The boys came out ready to compete after three and a half weeks of practice in their first match of the season," Blue Devils coach Ted Cummings said. "With the inspiring words and presence of Walla Walla School District Superintendant Mick Miller, who opened the season-opening ceremonial balls, our players swept the doubles and nearly won all four singles matches in the 6-1 team victory."

Wa Hi's No. 1 singles player Cam Davis overcame a slow start and finished with a flurry of big ground strokes to win 6-4 in the third set.

Kevin Leier defeated last year's District sixth-place singles finisher "as he thrived on his powerful forehand and quick court coverage," Cummings said.

At No. 3 singles, Ruben Kuznetsov "was literally points away from winning both sets but was edged out in a two hour, two set marathon," he said.

Jack Crouter at No. 4 singles handled his opponent 6-1, 6-1.

"The three doubles teams may eventually be our strength because of our team depth," Cummings said.

Blake Rowley and Josh Kuznetsov teamed for the No. 1 doubles win, James Tupper-Bridges and Drew Swenson won at No. 2 doubles, and John Meliah and Brendan McKinney also were victorious at No. 3.

Wa-Hi travels to Pasco and Kamiakin on Saturday.
