ASOTIN - Bad starts led to an Asotin sweep of a Southeast 2B doubleheader here Saturday in baseball action.
The Panthers scored two first-inning runs in the opener and Waitsburg-Prescott couldn't catch up to Panther southpaw Jackson Webb as Webb threw a shutout and dropped W-P, 3-0.
In the nightcap, the Panthers took advantage of four base-on-balls to score five times in the first and went on to post a 7-3 win.
After the first inning of the opener, Zach Bartlow settled in and limited the Panthers to a lone sixth-inning run, but Webb got more than he needed in the first.
The Panther lefty limited W-P to only two hits, blows by Bartlow and Tre Brannock, while striking out 14 in blanking W-P.
"We had a couple of errors in the first," W-P coach Dustin Snedigan said. "You can't give too many runs to that guy (Webb). He is a tough competitor. We didn't swing it well, but he's about as good as you'll see at this level."
The nightcap followed the same script as Asotin got five in the first and W-P never recovered.
"We walked four in a row," Snedigan said of the Panther first. "Then they got a couple of bloopers and all of a sudden it's 5-1. We couldn't recover as we never really threatened."
After the disastrous first, W-P starting pitcher, Joe Purdin, settled down as he and Dalton Estes limited the Panther attack to two runs.
W-P scored twice in the fourth to cut the gap to 6-3, but would get no closer.
"Purdin threw 50 pitches in the first inning," Snedigan said. "But he settled in and threw 50 over the next four innings. It was good to see him overcome a bad start."
T.J. Hofer, Bartlow, Brannock, David Brock, Estes and Tucker Allenan collected safeties for W-P in the 7-3 loss.
W-P drops to 0-2 in league and entertains Weston-McEwen Monday at Prescott in a non-league affair.
