UNION - Weston-McEwen rode the pitching of Hayley Freske to two non-league softball wins here at the Union Tournament Saturday.
Freske pitched a complete game with 14 strikeouts as the TigerScots defeated Central-Linn, 4-3, in the opener.
Freske came back with another 14 strikeout performance as W-M overcame a shaky start to come back and defeat Union, 4-3, in the nightcap.
"I wondered why we didn't make more errors," W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. "They (the opponents) didn't have many opportunities with Hayley striking out 28 (out of 42 outs). She had a really good outing despite the cold, miserable weather."
In the opener, Central-Linn got it tied at 3-3 going to the W-M sixth.
Freshman Molly von Borstel legged out an infield hit and stole second. A Claire Ely flyout moved von Borstel to third, and von Borstel scooted home on a passed ball to score what Freske made stand up for the winning run.
Morgan Entze collected two hits to lead the TigerScot hitters.
Union jumped to a 2-0 lead after one in the second game.
"Poor defense in the first got us down," Griggs said. "We didn't give up."
A von Borstel sac bunt got one back in a two-run TigerScot third as W-M tied it at 2-2.
After Union grabbed a 3-2 lead, an Entze double in the W-M fifth got runners to second and third. Again, von Borstel came through. The freshman delivered a two-run single and Freske pitched out of a seventh-inning jam to preserve the win.
Entze and Rilei Hill each delivered two hits to lead the W-M eight-hit attack.
The TigerScots improve to 3-3 and travel to Prescott Tuesday at 4 p.m. for a non-league game with Waitsburg-Prescott.
"We've got a lot of work to do in the next couple of weeks (before league starts)," Griggs said. "But, we were glad to get the opportunity to play in the tournament."
