DeSales Knowledge Bowl team state champions again

WALLA WALLA - Members of DeSales Catholic High School's Knowledge Bowl team are state champions once again.

The team took home the first-place trophy following the state's small schools tournament at Central Valley High School in Spokane on Saturday. Eighteen schools participated.

The trophy eluded the DeSales team last year, when it was in Spokane to defend the state title it earned in 2009. The team took fourth place last year.

DeSales took the trophy back from Saint George's School in Spokane, one of the school's main challengers that came in first last year. Saint George's came in second on Saturday.

Competing Saturday for DeSales were Kincaid Schmitz, Peter Vander Griend, Dani Hall, Heather Diaz, Hanna Schoeppner, and Joshua Scheel,

The students have spent the year competing and practicing weekly to prepare for the state match.

DeSales students completed four oral rounds and one written test to earn 117 points, with Saint George's students earning 98.
