RICHLAND - The youth of Touchet's baseball team showed in 8-1 and 13-3 losses to Liberty Christian in nonleague play here Tuesday.
The Indians committed three errors in each game.
"The first game, we hit the ball OK," Touchet coach Wayne Dickey said, "but we hit it right at them. We just gave up too many runs, and hopefully we can start doing a better job defensively.
"In the second game, the eight hits were nice to see," he said. "We started to get the ball to fall in a little bit for us. We had some errors that hurt us defensively. They're (the Patriots) are a very good baseball team and they took advantage of the mistakes we made on defense. Hopefully, we can improve on the defensive side."
Touchet sophomore Nate Ortiz went the distance on the mound, giving up just three earned runs.
"He did a good job," Dickey said. "We're hoping we'll back him up a little better defensively in the future."
Eric Hines had three Indians hits in the nightcap, coming within a home run of hitting for the cycle.
"We're really young, playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores," Dickey said of his Touchet squad, which is now 1-5 on the season.
The Indians finished 18-2 last season, but graduation took its toll on the team.
"I think with some patience these guys are going to improve and get better in the future," Dickey said.
The Indians are off until April 16, when they head to Colton for an 11 a.m. twin bill.
