WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi's boys tennis team recorded a 7-0 shutout of visiting Chiawana here Wednesday.
The victory improves the boys to 4-0.
At No. 1 singles, Wa-Hi senior Cameron Davis avenged a loss last year at the top spot to Chiawana's Jason Toyoda 6-2, 6-1 at the Walla Walla Country Club courts. It was a rescheduled dual match from a rainout on Tuesday.
"Cam is so much more consistent and well-rounded in his play compared to his junior year," Wa-Hi coach Ted Cummings said. "That's the dream of every coach and player: to come back even stronger the next year and avenge a loss.
"Kevin Leier, at the No. 2 position, fought through some lingering effects of an illness and battled back in a three-set win over Jose Mendoza, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the match of the day. Kevin, like Cameron, is a four-year varsity award-winner for the Blue Devils and showed great ‘will' during the final two sets.
"Ruben (Kuznetsov) and Jack (Crouter) didn't allow a single game to their opponents in No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively," Peck said. "Early in Jack's varsity career (as a freshmen) he gave up a few of these decisive matches and is now the one dishing out the dominance. The depth of the 2011 team is so evident in our doubles teams as their opponents averaged only slightly over a single game won per set played.
It's been a number of years since we have started out so strongly in Columbia Basin League play and we're all pretty excited about the remaining challenges this season."
Wa Hi next hosts Eisenhower on April 13, and then participates in the 16-team Tri-City Invitational April 15-16.
