WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi's girls picked up a Big Nine tennis victory over visiting Chiawana here Wednesday, 7-0.
"The girls continue to impress me with their efficiency and maturity on the courts," Blue Devils coach Keven Peck said. "Our singles players Claire Konen, Tianna Cummings, Mary Felt and Rachel Schueller all played well and got decisive wins. Our doubles teams of Kristine Leier and Chantel Desjarlais and Rosa Tobin and Allison Mehn also played extremely well and pulled off dominate two set matches.
"The highlight story of today's match, however, was the freshmen No. 3 doubles team of Mari Arceo and Danielle Thongdy," he said. "These two girls are new to the program, but they have quickly adapted to our philosophy of never quitting. After dropping the first set 1-6, they came storming back to win the second set 6-2 (to split sets), and then went on to win the third set 6-2 to give us our seventh and final match point. It was a great stepping stone in their development as players.
"These are not the type of girls who are going to become over confident with a 4-0 start," Cummings said. "We have our toughest matches ahead of us with Wentachee, Ike and Richland still on the schedule. We will have to return from spring break ready to get back to work if we want to continue being this successful. I have no doubt that these girls will be ready to go to work when school resumes after break."
