PRESCOTT - Waitsburg-Prescott picked up at least part of the Southeast 2B league softball championship with a 7-1 second-game win over DeSales here Tuesday.

The Irish won the opener, 5-3.

The split caps W-P's league season and gives them the guaranteed No. 1 seed in district play.

"It's a great feeling because we're done with league and everyone else still has a ton to play due to rainouts," said W-P coach Angie Potts. "We've got a couple of single games with Touchet and Colfax, but as far as any pressure goes, there's no need-to-wins, so all of that's off. We can sit back, prepare and watch the other teams play and see how they finish up.

"It's a great feeling because we can breathe and relax."

The first-game loss wasn't conducive to the end.

The Irish and W-P kept it scoreless through the first two innings, but W-P got a runner on and around for a 1-0 lead after three.

"The first game was a bit of a pitcher's battle," DeSales coach Russ Vera said. "We had hits, but not with runners on."

W-P's 1-0 lead held until the sixth, when the Irish scored one to tie. They came up big in the top of the seventh with four runs for the 5-3 win.

"The girls pulled it out with the last at-bat," Vera said.

Ashlyn Lyons had 13 strikeouts in the game.

"We struggled a bit at the plate," Potts said. "We didn't get a chance to do hitting preperation like we wanted to Monday because fot he rain and that set us back."

By game two, W-P was ready for them.

"We did a much better job," Potts said. "We had half the strikeouts and put the ball in play quite a bit more. It was a huge difference in our confidence level at bat."

For DeSales, the confidence was missing.

"We just didn't hit," Vera said of the four-hit loss. "When you only get four hits, you're not going to score a lot of runs. With a team like W-P, you have to get more than four hits to beat them."

DeSales and W-P were tied through the top of the third, when W-P posed another run for a 2-1 lead. They would score five more en route to the win.

"They played well," Vera said. "We just didn't play to our potential."

Lyons had eight strikeouts in the second game.

"She pitched real well, we just didn't have enough offense to help her out," Vera said.

The Irish are 3-3 in league and 5-4 overall. They host Asotin Saturday and have three doubleheaders left in the season.

For W-P, the game-two win seals the championship. Although they could still tie for the league championship, they have the higher draw in a tiebreaker and would take the No. 1 seed to districts. They'll play the No. 2 seed out of the league on May 20 at the Trac in Pasco.
