Wenatchee bounces Wa-Hi boys in final regular-season match

The Blue Devils beat Wenatchee for the first time in six years on Saturday.

WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi's girls tennis team made history on Saturday by defeating Wenatchee, 5-2, in a Big Nine Conference match on the Blue Devil courts.

It marked the first time the Blue Devil girls had beaten the Panthers in six years and, more importantly, clinched the league championship.

"The girls played really well," Wa-Hi coach Keven Peck said. "They never gave up when they were down and they battled hard for every point. When they can do that, winning takes care of itself."

Wa-Hi changed up its doubles teams in an effort to sweep the three matches, Peck said. Kristine Leier and Chantel Desjarlais claimed a three-set victory in No. 1 doubles while duos Allison Mehn and Rachel Schueller and Rosa Tobin and Mari Arceo posted straight-set triumphs at No. 2 and 3, respectively.

Singles highlights for the newly-crowned Big Nine champions were provided by Tianna Cummings and Claire Konen. Cummings won in No. 1 singles and Konen improved to 8-0 in the No. 2 slot.

"Tianna has been a tough No. 1 for us this year and (Saturday) she showed why," Peck said. "Claire put in another dominant performance. She is consistent and willing to slug it out with whomever the opposition brings. That makes her hard to beat.

"The girls showed a great deal of character and maturity this week by embracing the idea that we needed to make changes to strengthen the team," Peck said. "They all knew it would put them in different roles for the team, but they didn't allow the changes to disrupt the team dynamic. This is the type of attitude they have had all season. Their selflessness and commitment to the team good has earned them a league championship. They can be very proud of themselves."
