Body found in Snake River identified

BURBANK -- A woman found dead Friday in the Snake River has been identified.

The victim, Helen T. Lawrence, 73, was identified by her son later that evening, said Walla Walla County Coroner Richard Greenwood.

The body had been found by people fishing from a boat about 1:45 p.m. Friday and was recovered by members of the Columbia Basin Dive Rescue Team.

Walla Walla County Undersheriff Edward Freyer said today deputies checking residences in the area later that day were contacted by Lawrence's son who had heard news reports of the body's discovery. The son went with an officer to her home and found her missing.

Greenwood said an autopsy determined the woman had drowned and the death has been ruled accidental.

Freyer said members of the Walla Walla County Search and Rescue aided investigators by searching the riverbank for evidence.
