Waitsburg-Prescott ends Indians' season with nonleague baseball loss

Waitsburg-Prescott piles up 17 runs in the final two innings to rally past Touchet for the 17-10 victory.

TOUCHET - Waitsburg-Prescott roared back from a 9-0 hole after the fifth inning to drop Touchet, 17-10, in nonleague baseball, the Indians' final game of the year.

W-P had 14 hits in the final two stanzas, with four doubles and four triples for the win.

"We didn't give them the game with errors," said Touchet coach Wayne Dickey. "W-P flat hit the baseball. You've got to give them credit. Defensively, we backed up our pitching and hit the ball."

Touchet had its 10 runs on 10 hits, including a Cori Ochoa grand slam home run in the fifth inning.

"I was pleased with the way the kids have been playing baseball," Dickey said. "Defensively, we've been doing a pretty good job."

But the Southeast 1B Indians couldn't answer 2B playoff-bound W-P in the final two innings.

"They put those hits together in the last two," Dickey said. "Up to that point, they only had one hit in the game."

Touchet starter Nate Ortiz had eight strikeouts and three walks across the first five innings.

"It could've been over in the fifth," Dickey said. "We had the bases loaded with nine runs."

But a batter was hit and didn't walk and the Indians hesitated over a past ball that could've scored the go-ahead.

"We didn't score," Dickey said.

W-P's Zach Bartlow had a double, triple and "a bunch of RBI," Dalton Estes had a double, single and three RBI, Tre Brannock had a single, double and triple, going 3-for-3 in the last two innings and notching four RBI, and Matt Hamilton had a double and single with an RBI.

"The top of the order flat crushed the ball," Dickey said.

Touchet ended its season with a 6-12 overall record and at 2-5 in league play. Seniors Joe Weber (right field) and Rolando Flores (outfield, second base) graduate, and Dickey expects the underclassmen to step up.

"For a young team, like I told the kids - they really did improve as the season progressed," Dickey said. "Hopefully we'll have a good year of experience to take into next season."

W-P continues its season today in a playoff game at Liberty Christian. They're 7-1 in SE2B play and 17-2 overall.
