MILTON-FREEWATER -- A man wanted on multiple charges was arrested Wednesday morning after attempting to flee police on foot.

George W. Craigen, 48, ran from a residence in the 52000 block of Stephens Road about 9:38 a.m. after he saw a Umatilla County Sheriff's deputy sergeant drive up to arrest him, said Sheriff John Trumbo. Craigen was wanted on warrants from Hawaii and Umatilla County, according to police.

Officers had served a search warrant on the residence Tuesday, Trumbo said, but Craigen was not there. Police went back to the residence Wednesday after an anonymous caller reported Craigen had returned.

After Craigen ran into an nearby orchard, officers from Milton-Freewater Police, the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office, Athena Police and Oregon State Police came in to help search for the fugitive. Craigen was eventually found hiding in a bush and surrendered peacefully, Trumbo said.

Craigen was being held today in Umatilla County Jail for investigation of probation violation, felon in possession of a firearm, falsifying business records, unsworn falsification and being a fugitive from another state.
