Warriors split East baseball twin bill with Chukars

ONTARIO, Ore. - Walla Walla Community College split an NWAACC East Region baseball twin bill at Treasure Valley here Wednesday.

The Warriors dropped the opener, 2-1, before overcoming a three-run Chukars' first inning to take a 9-3 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Tyler Roberts went the distance for the Warriors, striking out three and giving up no earned runs.

"This was a great pitchers' duel," WWCC coach Dave Meliah said. "Tyler threw his heart out. Unfortunately, we had a couple fielding miscues that cost us."

Marc Garza had a pair of doubles in the game.

In the nightcap, WWCC had a five-RBI outing by Mike Paulson to overcome the early Chukar lead. Paulson had an RBI single in the second inning, a two-RBI double in the third and a two-RBI single in the ninth to lead the Warriors to the 9-3 victory.

Jared Jordan had two doubles, Kyle Sani had a double and a single, and Michael Leach had two singles in the game.

Brett Watson had six strikeouts while giving up two earned runs in the complete-game victory for WWCC.

"I'm really proud of Brett for working through a tough first inning and finishing the game getting stronger and stronger each inning," Meliah said.

And the Warrior offense backed Watson's strong outing.

"We had some big hits, scoring seven runs with two outs," Meliah said.

The Warriors also set a school record for doubles in a season during the second game, recording their 96th double to top a mark set in 1998.

The Warriors, now 27-13 overall and 17-9 in the NWAACC East, host Yakima for a twin bill at 1 p.m. Saturday.
