DeSales splits SE2B softball twin bill with T-O-R

TEKOA - DeSales' softball team had its chance to at least tie the game in the top of the seventh of a Southeast 2B twin bill against Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia here Thursday, but couldn't get the hit needed in a 5-4 loss.

The Irish were sparked by the loss, found their bats and ended the nightcap with a 14-4 victory.

The split leaves DeSales at 6-4 in league play, 9-7 overall, and the Irish have two regular-season games left as they host Liberty Christian at 3 p.m. today.

One win today secures third place for the Irish headed to the district tournament. DeSales hosts a game Tuesday if it finishes third or fourth.

On Thursday, "we just didn't hit very well," Irish coach Russ Vera said, "and if we did hit we didn't have runners on. Two crucial errors let them score runs."

DeSales had a 4-3 lead headed into the bottom fifth inning, but single Patriot runs in the fifth and sixth lifted them into the lead. The Irish had a runner on third in the top of the seventh but couldn't bring her home.

The Irish scored six second-inning runs and seven fourth-inning runs to blow the nightcap open.

"The girls hit the ball really well," Vera said. "They were on fire, they played the way they should play.

"We've been kind of hit-and-miss all season. Hopefully, this (game-two win) will carry over to our games today."

Ashlyn Lyons had nine strikeouts in each game for DeSales, and also had two doubles in the opener and four hits (including two home runs) in the nightcap for a six RBI day.

"Stephanie Ferrel came up big (with five hits on the day), and lower part of the lineup came up big as well," Vera said. "We've been struggling at the bottom part of the lineup. This game, our 6, 7, 8 and 9 hitters came up with some key hits."

If DeSales splits today, the Irish likely would host Liberty Christian, probably the sixth seed, at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a district loser-out game.
