Warriors claim share of NWAACC East title

The WWCC softball team sweeps Columbia Basin Saturday, 9-1 and 4-1, to take the region's No. 1 seed to the NWAACC Championships.

WALLA WALLA - Walla Walla Community College claimed a share of the NWAACC Eastern Region softball championship Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Columbia Basin, 9-1 and 4-1, on Sophomore Day at Warrior Field.

Freshman Dara Kosanke tossed complete games in both ends of the twin bill. She allowed just nine hits (four in the first game and five in the second) and struck out nine (four in game one and five in game two) on the day.

"Dara did a terrific job," WWCC coach Mike Staudenmaier said. "She came through with a pair of clutch performances."

The 2011 Warriors, who claimed the program's first division crown since 2002, finished league play 23-5 and will take a 33-10 overall record - and the East's No.1 seed - into the NWAACC Championships which begin Friday at East Delta Park in Portland. WWCC will face Lower Columbia, the No. 4 seed out of the South Region, in an opening-round game at 11:30 a.m.

"It's been a remarkable year," Staudenmaier said. "I'm so proud of our girls. But we realize there is still a lot of ball left to be played."

Walla Walla set the tone for game one with four first-inning runs after two outs had been recorded. Sami Verity administered the big blow of the frame - a three-run home run to right-center field.

"Sami really put a good swing on that pitch," Staudenmaier said. "That four-run first was a great way to start."

The Warriors scored three times in the third inning and twice more in the fourth.

Katie Martell set the pace for WWCC's 10-hit barrage with three safeties.

Walla Walla tallied twice in the first inning of game two, and added single runs in frames three and five.

Kaylie Winston, Alexis Bobadilla and Mercedes Pearson had two hits apiece in the game for the Warriors. One of Pearson's hits was a home run.

Saturday's double dip was the last at Warrior Field for sophomores Bobadilla, Shelbi King, Ramey Chambers, Sarah Weekes, Abbey Reardon and Alaura Seley.
