Martha Hetterley of Milton-Freewater passed away May 5, 2011, at the Milton-Freewater Health and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 83 years. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. A reception and celebration of life will follow at the Milton-Freewater Elks Lodge. Those who wish may make memorial contributions in memory of Martha Hetterley to a charity of choice in care of the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.
Martha Hetterley was born Dec. 22, 1927, in Tolstoy, S.D., the daughter of John and Lydia (Lout) Wolff. She attended area schools and graduated from McLaughlin High School in South Dakota. A few years after graduation, Martha met and married Jake Francis Hetterley. Together the couple farmed and moved to North Dakota before finally settling in Milton-Freewater in 1962. Jake later preceded her in death. Martha worked for the Umatilla Cannery, Birds Eye Frozen Foods and for 15 years worked at the Walla Walla VA hospital until her retirement. Martha enjoyed traveling, dinner functions and activities at the Milton-Freewater Elks Lodge and most of all loved spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law; Robert and Mary Kay Hetterley of College Place, Larry and Gloria Hetterley of Milton-Freewater, Duane and Linda Hetterley of Athena and Roland and Teri Hetterley of Haines, Ore.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband Jake Hetterley; three brothers; one sister; three infant grandsons and companion of 18 years Bob Hillard all preceded her in death.
