DeSales pole vaulter Megan Moberg has room to spare as she clears the 7 foot 6 inch mark to win the girl's pole vault at the District 9 2B Track Championships Thursday afternoon at Martin Field.

WALLA WALLA - Waitsburg-Prescott claimed its fifth straight boys district championship - and the program's sixth in the last seven seasons - and DeSales nipped W-P on the girls side for second place on Friday during the final session of the Class 2B District 9 track and field meet at Martin Field.

The top two finals finishers in each event punched their tickets for next weekend's Class 2B state meet at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

"We had a great day," W-P coach Jeff Bartlow said. "Our kids really responded well. Our boys 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams PR'd and that was really exciting. Our girls 4x1 finished second. When a team gets to state, it's a beautiful thing for us."

W-P's top boys were Seth Deal - who won the 1600 (4:34.95) and 3200 (10:02.29) - and Eshom Estes, the winner of both the shot put (44 feet, one inch) and the javelin (154-3).

Antonio Thompkins won the 100 (11.65), James Thompkins won the 200 (23.51), and Jared Morris won the 400 (53.89). Billy Brown, the Thompkins, and Morris won the 400 relay (45.40). Morris, Brown, Logan Dozier, and James Thompkins won the 1600 relay (3:43.30)

Brown was second in the 300 hurdles (16.82), and Estes was runner-up in the discus (134-1).

Freshman Allison Wujek led the Irish girls to their second-place finish by winning the 100 hurdles (17.14), the high jump (5-0), and the long jump (15-10). Megan Moberg won the pole vault (7-6) and joined Brigit Lyons, Jessica Arnzen and Jade Donnelly to win the 1600 relay (4:28.96).

Arnzen was second in the 400 (1:03.25) and the 800 (2:29.21). Lyons, Arnzen, Moberg, and Wujek were second in the 800 relay (1:53.58).

"Our kids had an outstanding district meet," DeSales coach Mike Michels said. "They stepped up to the plate and got the job done. Our girls are really tough. The coaching staff is extremely excited and happy. We couldn't ask for anything more."

Kristin Potter paced the W-P girls with triumphs in the 100 (13.42), 200 (27.33), and 400 (1:02.45).

Ronnie Hulce was second in the 100 hurdles (17.31), the 300 hurdles (49.17), and the high jump (4-10). Potter, Hulce, Kayla Huxoll, and Krystal Harris were second in the 400 relay (53.51).

The DeSales boys were fourth in the eight-team field and got state-qualifying performances from Anthony Brown and Nick Wales. Brown won the discus (136-8) and Wales was second in the 300 hurdles (40.72).

It was a day of what could have been for Walla Walla Valley Academy, which had numerous third-place finishers but were unable to land a state berth.

"We had a guy (Brandon Bissell) who was second until the final long jump and missed (qualifying for state) by an inch," WWVA coach Dan Solis said. "That's the way our day (went). Some of our kids just didn't have their best days. Some came up just short. We had a lot of near misses."

Dayton will have one representative at state. Adam Strohbehn earned a trip to Cheney with a win in the long jump (19-1).
