Warriors battle for playoff berth today with Yakima

WWCC baseball wins twice Friday but loses to the Yaks Saturday.

PASCO - Walla Walla Community College won two games Friday and lost one Saturday, sending them into a loser-out game with Yakima today for the No. 1 - and final - seed to the NWAACC tournament in Longview this week.

That game is at noon today at Columbia Basin in Pasco.

WWCC (30-15 overall) topped Columbia Basin, 3-2, and Yakima Valley, 6-2, on Friday, but fell to Yakima 5-4 on Saturday.

"We battled back but it wasn't quite enough," said WWCC head coach Dave Meliah. "Luckily, we took care of business yesterday (Friday), so now we have another shot to get into the NWACC tournament."

The Warriors were down 5-0, but came back to score four runs in the sixth inning, including a two-RBI single by Marc Garza and an RBI double by Chance Kopacz. They were unable to come closer.

The Warriors topped CBC on Friday in a 14-inning affair, with an RBI single by Alex Bonczyk sealing the win. Bonczyk scored Neal Schuck, who walked, then moved to third on an errant pick-off attempt at first.

Kopacz and Kasey Knigge added two hits each in the winning effort.

"That was playoff baseball at its finest," Meliah said of the 3-2 win. "(It was) a couple of good teams going toe to toe."

WWCC ran three pitchers to the mound. Tyler Roberts lasted eight innings, Anthony Garza two innings and Nick Jordan closed it out.

"Our three pitchers were outstanding," Meliah said. "They worked through some jams and competed like crazy."

The Warriors came back later to top Yakima, 6-2. Bret Watson pitched the complete game, striking out three.

Three Warriors had two hits each - Brandon Renteria, Marc Garza and Kyle Sani.

"We were able to take advantage of some miscues in the fourth," Meliah said. "The guys really played with a lot of passion (Friday)."
