IRRIGON - The Weston-McEwen softball team beat Irrigon, 5-0, and lost to Pilot Rock, 4-3, in Special District Five playoffs here Saturday. The split sends the TigerScots as the second seed in the district, going into the 16-team state playoffs.
W-M will play in the first round Wednesday.
Haley Freske went the distance in the circle for W-M in both games, striking out 11 Knights and walking just one in the first-game shutout.
Joshlyn Kilgore had two hits for the TigerScots, including a two-RBI double in the four-run second inning. McKenzie Fuhrman added an RBI groundout to the stanza.
Freske gave up four runs on four hits against Pilot Rock.
Piper Karstens had Freske's number in the fifth inning. She doubled in two runs, both which had walked to base. Freske gave up five walks to the Rockets. The one run for the Rockets in inning one was unearned.
"We had some balls that were routine that we didn't handle," said W-M coach Jeff Griggs. "That allowed a run to come home and it cost us in a tight game."
In the winning effort of game one, W-M's Joshlyn Kilgore was the hitting hero with two hits, including a 2-RBI double. That double came in the four run second inning for the TigerScots that took control of the game.
Freske had four hits on the day.
The TigerScots head into the state playoffs at 15-9 on the season.
