WALLA WALLA -- Public comments will soon be sought for a project to reduce the potential for wildfires in the Mill Creek watershed .

Starting Wednesday, the draft environmental assessment for the fuels reduction project will be available for reading online or at Walla Walla County Fire District 4 Fire Department, 2251 S. Howard St. Comments will be taken through June 24.

The assessment evaluates two alternatives. One is to take no action and the second is to remove brush and other flammable materials by hand in the Mill Creek drainage area about six miles southeast of the city of Walla Walla.

If no significant problems are identified during the comment period, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will finalize the assessment. A "Finding of No Significant Impact" and the agency will then fund the project.

Unless substantive comments are received, FEMA will not publish another notice for the project, said Abbie VanDonge, Walla Walla County Emergency Management assistant director.

Written comments should sent to Mark Eberlein, regional environmental officer, FEMA Region X, 130 228th Street SW, Bothell, WA 98021.
