Trial date set for inmates in riot

WALLA WALLA -- Three prison inmates pleaded innocent Monday afternoon to crimes they allegedly committed during a riot at the Washington State Penitentiary more than two years ago.

Lamark A. Walker, Daniel F. Salas and Mark J. Viena are set for trial Aug. 8 and 9 in Walla Walla County Superior Court.

Officials said a fight between two inmates broke out about 1 p.m. Feb. 7, 2009. It then escalated into a melee involving at least 24 prisoners in the day room of Unit 6 in the prison's main institution, according to authorities.

Walker, 43, is charged with second-degree assault and prison riot for allegedly throwing a wooden storage box at a fellow inmate.

Salas, 33, and Viena, 34, are accused of custodial assault and prison riot. Each is suspected of assaulting a correctional officer during the massive fight.
