Applications still being accepted for Whitman College summer program

The program exposes middle school students to what college is like.

WALLA WALLA - The application deadline for a Whitman College summer program geared for middle school students has been extended.

The Whitman Institute for Scholastic Achievement will accept applications through June 10. The original deadline had been May 20.

The WISE program, which runs Aug. 7-9, covers the costs for middle school students to experience the college life. Over three days, students attend classes taught by Whitman professors and stay in college dorms over two nights. College prep workshops are offered, as well as the chance to meet with current Whitman students who serve as resident assistants and mentors.

The goal of the program is to get students thinking positively about going to college, according to online information. The program is geared primarily for students from low-income families or those who would be the first in their families to attend college.

Parent workshops are also included to introduce families to the financial aid process and about making good academic choices in high school. Downtime for students is also scheduled with recreational activities and socializing.

Applications can be found online at, or by calling Sonja Aikens at 527-5596.
