YAKIMA - DeSales pitcher Ashlyn Lyons led the Irish softball team to two wins in the opening rounds of the state Class 2B tournament at the Gateway Sports Complex Friday.
The Irish beat up on the Toutle Lake Ducks, 7-1, and routed the Northwest Christian Crusaders, 8-1.
Lyons struck out 14 batters in each game and allowed a total of five walks and hits each in giving up the two total runs.
Lyons got four hits in the two games and six RBIs. She hit with power, too, with a home run, double and two triples.
"Fourteen strikeouts is about Lyons' average per game," Irish coach Russ Vera said. "And offensively, she leads us in about every category.
"Ashlyn is a solid, sound ballplayer."
Leadoff hitter and shortstop Stephanie Ferrel got three hits in the game against the Ducks and reached base four times against the Crusaders, including two walks.
"Ferrel, our leadoff, gets on base all the time," Vera said. "It doesn't matter how she does it, but that she does it - I look for her to scores runs even when she isn't getting hits."
Eighth grader Molli Lesko caught Lyons in both games and batted in the No. 2 hole, collecting two hits in the games Friday.
"This is Molli's first year as a catcher," Vera explained. "She started out the season as my second baseman and then volunteered to catch when we had some problems at that position.
"Molli is getting better every single game and really does a great job behind the plate," he said. "It really makes a difference."
Lesko has four pitches to call for from Lyons, a fastball, change, drop and rise ball for Lyons.
Against the Ducks, the Irish scored four runs in the first three innings.
Lyons tripled to start the two-run rally in the top of the first. Alex Buley doubled her in to score and Bobbi Prior singled in Buley.
In the top of the third, Lyons crushed a line drive to center field for a home run. Buley walked and Prior singled. A two-base error attempting to get Prior at second base on the single allowed Buley to score.
The only run the Ducks were able to score came in the bottom of the fourth.
The Irish added a single run in the fifth and sixth innings.
Two Ducks errors put Irish runners on in the fifth and Claire Conley singled one of them into score.
In the sixth, Megan Hamada reached on an error, moved to second on a groundout and to third on a Ferrel infield hit. Lesko walked to load the bases and then Lyons was hit-by-pitch to force in the run.
Against the Crusaders, DeSales scored two runs in the first and fourth inning.
In the first, Ferrel reached on an error. Lesko lined a single to right and Lyons tripled them both in to score.
Briana James singled to center and Conley knocked a hit over the third baseman's head. Hamada had an RBI groundout and Ferrel's swinging bunt single pushed across another run.
The Irish added four in the bottom of the sixth. This was in response to the single run scored by Northwest Christian in the top of the inning.
Conley reached on an error, Hamada singled and Ferrel walked to load the bases. Lesko hit a grounder to short and the relay home to get the runner wasn't in time. Everybody was safe.
Lyons hit a two-run double and Buley grounded out, but picked up an RBI.
"Everybody contributed," Vera said. "We hit the ball real well. We played defense well. The girls really played a great couple of games. Two good wins to start the tournament.
"We are in the winner's bracket going into Saturday and that is something that we've yet to accomplish while I've been the coach the last three years," he said. "So, it is big for all of us."
