TACOMA - Wa-Hi's Sydney Christensen registered a fourth-place finish in the discus here Thursday during the opening session of the Class 4A state track and field championships at Mount Tahoma High School.

Christensen threw the discus 125 feet, 8 inches.

Kentwood's Alyx Toeaian won the event with a mark of 136-3. Alexis Sarver of Arlington was second (134-5) and Thomas Jefferson's Kayla Adams was third (126-9).

"The highlight of the meet was Sydney Christensen placing fourth in the girls discus," Wa-Hi coach Eric Hisaw said. "She had just a fabulous day. It was the best series of throws she'd had her entire life. She was confident and really attacked her throws. She's worked so hard to get here and I'm so happy for her to finish up on the podium.

"The throwers had a really tough head wind to throw into and had that not been there, she may have thrown well into the 130s," he said. "It was still a fantastic showing and a fantastic way for her to end her high school career!"

Christensen's performance topped other Wa-Hi near-misses.

"The girls' 4x400-meter relay just ran into an absolute buzz-saw of speed," Hisaw said. "They really ran well. Problem was, they got a little behind and our second and third legs and had to weave from lane two out to lane eight to exchange the baton to the next runner and it really cost them about 1.5-2.5 seconds. They got caught in traffic and it hurt. They ran about a 4-flat equivalent, but ended up running a really solid 4:03. Their heat's winner ran a top 10 all-time Washington State time of 3:53 and the top five in their heat all broke 4-flat and placed in the finals.

"The girls ran well, and unfortunately, just got beat by really fast teams.

"Austin Morgan in the 800 led with one lap to go and just ran out of steam," Hisaw said. "He may have jumped to the lead a bit early, but he was trying to attack the race and it just got him in the end. He really battled his way through the season and made the most of his opportunity. For Austin to qualify for state was such a thrill and we're so happy he got to represent Wa-Hi over in Tacoma. He gets to continue on at Great Falls University next year and is going to be a huge help to their program.

"Kailee Davisson had a great race in the 400, actually, too great," he said. "She was tied for the lead at 200 meters and was third with 100 meters to go in her heat, and just ran out of gas. She didn't want to save anything and wanted to try to run in the 57s as a senior. She wasn't going to be satisified just being at the state meet. She wanted to really prove herself. Unfortunately, she just couldn't hold the pace and ended up really tired and ended up sixth in her heat. Her regional time would've placed her fifth in the state final.

"Maddie Jacobsen and Aaron Nelson had really tough days," Hisaw said. "We're not sure quite why, they just struggled. Sometimes that happens in individual sport and, dang it, it just happened at the wrong meet. They battled though, they never quit, it just wasn't in the cards this weekend.

"We had great kids and they competed their tails off," he said. "I wouldn't trade them for anyone in the world. They are all so special and we wouldn't be anywhere without them. It was such a great year and it's always so tough when it's over. We'll look back on this year for a long time to come, with so many wonderful memories."
