PRESCOTT - Waitsburg-Prescott's soccer team soundly defeated visiting Northwest Christian Wednesday, scoring five straight goals en route to a 5-1 victory over the Crusaders in a Bi-County 2B and Southeast 2B play-in match to determine which team goes to the Washington State playoffs.
"We feel great about it," W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said. "Our offense seems to be firing on all cylinders. Multiple people are scoring for us, not just one gun - and our defense is improving each day. I don't think we've seen how good it (the defense) is yet. We dominated both sides of the ball."
NWC's loan goal came in extra minutes on a corner kick that Potts said W-P was not set up correctly for.
Although giving up a late goal seems to be a recurring issue for W-P, Potts said it only happens when they hold a significant lead.
With the win, W-P moves on to a seeding match with St. George's, also of the Bi-County League, to determine which team takes the first and second seeds to the State playoffs. Waitsburg-Prescott fought the Dragons to a draw twice previously this year.
Francisco Gonzales scored a goal and assisted on two more in the first half of the victory over Northwest Christian.
Louis Torres knocked across the first goal in the 15th minute on a Gonzales assist.
Three minutes later, Aldair Escalante chased down a pass from Gonzales at the top of the penalty box for the second goal. G onzales scored his goal in the 29th minute to give W-P a commanding 3-0 lead going into the half.
The second half was Lino Diaz's, as he scored both W-P goals in the 48th and 61st minutes. He benefitted from assists by Enrique Balderas and Jesse Albaraan, respectively.
The win moves W-P to 13-1-2 for the season and W-P has a chance to avenge those two draws against St. George's Saturday at 2 p.m. in Prescott.
