WALLA WALLA - The schedule for the 2012 season of West Coast League summer baseball was released earlier this week by WCL president Ken Wilson.
In a rematch of the 2011 WCL Championship series, the Sweets open the season against the defending WCL champion Corvallis Knights. Opening day for the Walla Walla Sweets is June 1.
Start times this season will be 7:05 p.m. and 5:05 p.m.
"Last season we had a number of fans who requested games with an earlier start time," said Sweets' general manager Zachary Fraser. "We took that feedback into consideration when creating the 2012 schedule and decided to start a handful of games at 5:05 p.m."
The Sweets will play a total of 60 games during the 2012 season with 33 of those games being played at home. Of the 33 regular season home games, 27 are against league opponents and six against non-league opponents.
The Sweets will play at home on July 4 at 5:05 p.m. against the Wenatchee Applesox. With an early start time fans can celebrate the Fourth of July at Borleske Stadium and then head over to watch the city fireworks.
"We made sure to schedule this game so that everyone could attend the celebration in Pioneer Park in the early afternoon, attend the baseball game in the early evening, and then join family and friends to enjoy city fireworks after the game is over," Fraser added.
An additional event will be added to the Sweets schedule in 2012. Walla Walla will welcome the top players from around the league as the Sweets host the 2012 WCL All-Star game at Borleske Stadium. The game is scheduled for July 24 at 7:05 p.m. With the addition of the All-Star game the Sweets will have a total of 34 home games during the 2012 WCL season.
