WALLA WALLA - Whitworth scored on three of its first six shots and cruised to a 3-1 men's soccer victory over Whitman Saturday afternoon in Spokane.

After a corner kick in the 20th minute netted Whitworth its first goal, the Pirates tacked on two more goals in a four-minute span late in the half to build a comfortable cushion.

The second of two corner kicks produced a Whitman goal early in the second half to add some drama back into the contest.

Cooper Schumacher, scoring for the fourth time this season, got his head on a corner from Jed Jacobson to trim the Missionariy deficit to 3-1.

Trying to make it a one-goal game, Whitman fired off the next three shots over the next eight minutes. The Pirate defense blocked a shot by sophomore Junpei Tsuji, and shots by Schumacher and sophomore Reid Shaw were either high or wide.

Whitworth regained the offensive with the next five shots before Whitman made a final push in the closing minutes.

The Missionaries came up empty twice more, however, when Jacobson's shot was saved by the Whitworth keeper and senior Brian Percival launched a ball that sailed high.

Despite from the score, the game was even in terms of stats. Both sides took 12 shots and five corner kicks.

Schumacher, Shaw and Jesse Mirman took two shots apiece to pace Whitman's offense.

Percival was one of three Whitman seniors in uniform for a final time. Also calling it a career were Jordan Thomas and Nathan Ord.

Whitman finished its season with records of 9-5 in conference (good for fourth place) and 9-8-2 on the season.
