Walla Walla runners win at Nike Cross Regionals

BOISE - The Walla Walla Running Club, composed of Wa-Hi cross county runners, won the Varsity Division of the Nike Cross Regional Cross Country Championships here Saturday.

The team was led by John Paul Wolpert, who placed third overall in 16:23.

Sean Newcomb placed 23rd in 17:16), Greg Heller 41st in 17:26, Ben Wolpert 43rd in 17:27) and Sean Hollenbeck 54th in 17:37).

The Walla Walla team won with 132 points, with the second-place team following by 39 points.

Waitsburg-Prescott harrier Seth Deal ran unattached, finishing 63rd of 198 runners in the championship race in 16:54.

The Nike Cross meet is the Northwest Regional competition with teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Alaska, and Hawaii. The men's varsity event had 234 runners, from 26 teams competing.

J.P. Wolpert next competes in the Border Clash at the Nike campus in Beaverton, Ore., on Sunday.
