MILTON-FREEWATER - Eight Mac-Hi boys soccer players made the 2011 all-Greater Oregon League team Wednesday, including a strong showing from the Pioneers' defense, which placed four on the first team.
The first team selections are: senior defenders Alberto Garcia, Alberto Rodriguez, Francisco Carbajal; junior defender Salvador Saldana; senior midfielder Christian Zaragosa; and senior goalkeeper Francisco Flores.
Senior midfielders Roberto Sandoval and Juan Pablo Martinez each made the second team.
Garcia made the team despite injuring his collarbone in a match against La Grande on Oct. 20.
"He (Garcia) had a very good year, he developed a lot," Mac-Hi coach Jose Garcia said. "He was one of my playmakers because he would attack from the flank.
"Our defense was amazing," he continued. "We only allowed four goals the whole year. That was the second or third fewest in the whole state. We have to give credit to the guys who played four years for us and stayed with us."
Mac-Hi lost to Philomath in the quarterfinal round of the boys Class 4A Oregon state playoffs, 1-0, last Saturday.
