SUMNER, Wash. - Waitsburg-Prescott won the Class 1B/2B state championship Saturday, taking down Providence Classical Christian 1-0 at Sunset Chevrolet Stadium.
W-P's Francisco Gonzales scored the lone goal of the night in the 62nd minute on an assist from Louis Torres.
"(I) feel great about this team and am very proud of them," W-P coach Jay Potts said. "(They) pulled it off, especially being their second year in the program and to win the state title.
"Providence Classical Christian was a tough team who were big and strong, but we had our speed against their strength and it was a close game," Potts said.
W-P captain Kevin Ortega, who has been nagged by injuries all season long, had to sit out after the 13th-minute.
"He (Ortega) played through his injury during other games, but was just unable to during the championship making it a close game," Potts said.
On Friday, W-P defeated St. George's, 2-1, in the semifinals to advance to the championship, knocking St. George's into the losers' bracket.
St. George's was the first to score in the 49th minute, but Gonzales evened the score with a penalty kick at the 66th minute.
Torres scored the winning goal on a Gonzales assist in the 74th minute.
Last year, W-P fell to Shoreline-Christian, 2-1, in the opening round of the playoffs.
