YAKIMA - Transfer Brandi Hinton scored 42 points here Sunday afternoon, but fellow sophomore Brittney Newcomb delivered the dagger that lifted the Yaks to an 81-76 overtime victory over Walla Walla in the championship game of the YVC Tipoff Invitational women's basketball tournament.

Newcomb, a member of last year's NWAACC Championship Yakima team, scored a four-point play near the end of regulation that tied the game and ultimately sent it into overtime deadlocked at 67-67. It also ruined an inspired comeback by the Warriors, who trailed 33-22 at halftime and by as many as 16 points early in the second half.

The Warriors, who suffered their first loss of the season, fought back to lead by as many as six points in the second half and were up four with a minute-and-a-half remaining when Newcomb sank a long 3, drew a foul and converted the four-point play. Walla Walla never led in the overtime session.

Hinton, who sank 15-of-29 shots from the floor and was 6-for-12 from beyond the 3-point arc, played at Long Beach State last season. She was the Big West Conference freshman of the year.

"She is a 5-foot-9 Michael Jordan playing against high school kids," WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said in describing the Yaks star, who is averaging 30 points per game. "She quit after a year at Long Beach and I am really not sure what she is doing playing at this level.

"She can have any shot she wants. She is so much better than any kid at this level. We did everything to stop her and couldn't. She is the whole package. We'll have to figure something out because we will play them two more times this year."

Alex Pfefferle paced the Warriors with 20 points. Michelle Seitz scored 15, Leslie Stillar added 14 and Tai Jensen was a fourth Warrior in double figures with 10 points.

The Warriors reached the championship game by defeating a YVC alumni team 98-72 on Friday and Blue Mountain 64-55 in Saturday's semifinals.

In the season-opening win over the Yaks alumni squad, Stillar made 13-of-17 field goals and scored 33 points.

"We haven't had a girl score that many point in at least a couple of years," Hazeltine said of her sophomore shooting guard's season debut.
