UMATILLA -- Every autumn, flocks of ducks descend upon the ponds along the Columbia River at the McNary Wildlife Nature Area, about a mile downstream of McNary Lock and Dam on the Oregon shoreline. As winter approaches, more ducks and other wildlife can be seen throughout the nature area.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, park rangers from the McNary Natural Resources Management Office invite visitors to join them on a nature hike. Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon.

Hikers should meet at 10 a.m. in the Pacific Salmon Visitor Information Center. Visitors should wear sturdy walking shoes, dress for the weather and are encouraged to bring binoculars, cameras and a portable water bottle.

The trail relatively flat, however participants should be prepared to travel over uneven surfaces.
