WWU women fall to Warner

COLLEGE PLACE - On a night when Walla Walla University outshot its opponent and held its own rebounding the basketball, turnovers proved to be the Wolves' downfall.

Visting Warner University of Lake Wales, Fla., pressured the Wolves into 38 turnovers and used that advantage to pull away in the second half for a 76-57 women's victory.

The Wolves, who forced just 13 Royals turnovers, connected on 41 percent of their field goal tries and sank 53 percent from the free throw line. By contrast, Warner shot 28 percent from the field and 52 percent from the line.

But the big turnover advantage allowed the Royals to put up 95 shots from the floor, 49 more attempts than the Wolves, and that was the difference in the game. Walla Walla shot 19-for-36 from the line and the Royals were 14-for-27.

Tracy Gentry led four Royals in double figures with 17 points. Stephanie Wills scored 14 points, Shawnelle Campbell added 13 and Alexandra Melonson chipped in with 11.

Johanna Uribie had a strong all-around game for the Wolves with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, all team-high totals. Abbey Manzano was the only other WWU player in double figures with 14 points.

The home team held a slim 57-56 advantage on the glass, with Kiara Reeves leading Warner with a game-high 13 rebounds.

Warner, now 3-1, plays at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande tonight.

The Wolves, 0-9, are idle until this weekend when they play a pair of games at the College of Idaho tournament in Caldwell.
