Pomeroy pastes Sunnyside Christian

POMEROY - Pomeroy continued its strong play with 28 first-quarter points and pasted Southeast 1B foe Sunnyside Christian, 40-14, here Friday night.

"Sunnyside Christian is a pretty young team," Pirates coach Sanford Bates said. "But our kids came out and played well. We scored the first five times we had the ball. By the middle of the second quarter we were starting to play our younger kids. It was a good opportunity for them to get some time, and to rest up our older kids for next week when we start to run through the more difficult part of league play."

Austin Reisdorph opened Pomeroy's first-quarter offensive onslaught with a 44-yard touchdown less than five minutes in.

Jacob Moore followed by returning a punt 33 yards to paydirt, and then punched it in from the 3 for the Pirates' third score.

Tory Knebel unleashed a 56-yard scamper to end scoring in the opening period, and Brandan Lueck put Pomeroy up 34-0 with a five-yard run in the second quarter to open the door for the Pirate backups to get some time on the field.

Moore's 75-yard third-quarter kickoff return capped Pomeroy's scoring.

Sunnyside Christian got on the scoreboard with a 20-yard TD run in the third quarter, and had a 30-yard pass reception for a score on the final play of the game.

"We were doing things correctly," Bates said of the Pirates' quick start to the game. "We're being aggressive and taking care of the ball. And we got a couple scores off special teams - that always helps."

Knebel's 71 yards on three carries paced the Pirates, with Brandan Lueck picking up 42 yards on seven runs and Ryan Smith gaining 42 yards on just two carries.

The Pirates put up 229 yards on the ground.

Matt Fitzgerald had two catches, one each from Ryan Smith and Kade Snyder, for the Pirates' 38 yards through the air.

Bates highlighted the play of Nick Tewalt, primarily at safety, on defense for Pomeroy.

"He turned out late for us, so this was the first full game he had the opportunity to play in," Bates said. "He was our leading tackler. He came to play."

Bates said he was pleased with the Pirates' play Friday.

"One of our goals is to get better each week," he said. "I think we're doing that. Even though we didn't play a real strong team, the first quarter and a half we did thing we were supposed to do. That's always a nice thing."

Pomeroy, now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in SE1B play, now travels to Lacrosse-Washtucna Friday.
