ATHENA - The Weston-McEwen football team dealt a crushing blow to the Pilot Rock Rockets here Friday night. The TigerScots outgained the Rockets 449 yards to minus-15, and beat them on the scoreboard 41-0 in the Blue Mountain Conference opener for both teams.
TigerScot quarterback Dallas Reich hit Jared Bond on a 39-yard touchdown pass up the right side to open scoring in a 22-point first quarter and W-M never looked back.
"I really thought our offensive line blocked really well and gave Reich all kinds of time to set his feet and throw," W-M coach Kenzie Hansell said. "Everybody did their job tonight. The line blocked, the quarterback distributed the ball, the running backs ran well and the wide receivers caught the ball. It takes all 11 guys on the field to score and stop the other team on defense."
The Rockets managed just four first downs to the TigerScots' 15.
Wide receiver Bond caught five passes for 88 yards and the score.
On the ground, Elliot Salter led the TigerScots in the first half, amassing 69 yards and two touchdowns on just five carries. He added three catches for 30 yards and an additional score.
Through the air, Reich was 9-of-13 for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Reich added a long touchdown run from his quarterback position.
Reich ran a quarterback draw for a 35-yard touchdown romp, capping the 57-yard drive on the TigerScots' second possession. Salter converted both early 2-point opportunities on the run play and it was 16-0 just four and a half minutes into the game.
The second TigerScot touchdown came after the Rockets managed just minus-7 yards in their second drive.
Bad snaps, mishandled snaps and fumbles accounted for much of the negative yardage for the Rockets as the Pilot Rock backfield was blown up by W-M's defense.
The Rockets fumbled 11 times, losing none, but losing a lot of yards in the process.
Pilot Rock had 17 negative-yard plays on the evening.
"I was proud of our defense," Hansell said. "We have great team speed and an understanding that it takes 11 guys to make one tackle.
"It is great to coach such unselfish, team-orientated players," he said. "To coach players that know their responsibilities on the field and take care of them."
On the third possession for Pilot Rock, the Rockets picked up a first down but had two fumbles for losses and an additional play for a loss on a pitch to the tailback.
A 25-yard punt by the Rockets gave the TigerScots good field position, especially after a horse collar penalty and unsportsmanlike conduct call on the punt return called on the Rockets.
W-M started its next drive on the Pilot Rock 25-yard line. A couple of 10-yard Reich passes - one to Ron Terjeson and one to Nick Lively - moved the chains before a Salter eight-yard touchdown run.
Reich picked off a Tyler Simmons' pass on a third-and-long next during the Rockets' ensuing drive.
Starting at their own 35, W-M went 65 yards for another touchdown. The scoring strike was from Reich to Salter for 12 yards. The kick failed on W-M's fourth touchdown, as it did on the third W-M score, and the score was 28-0 TigerScots 30 seconds into the second quarter.
A three-and-out by Pilot Rock and a 26-yard punt set the stage for another W-M drive and score, which featured a couple of passes to Bond, a 22-yard run by Tyler Peterson and Salter's three-yard scoring run capping the drive.
Fourth-string TigerScots quarterback Linton McAllister, a freshman, led the final scoring drive of the game. He picked up nine yards on a quarterback draw and then went 48 yards on a quarterback option run. McAllister went to the right, backwards, to the middle and finished running down the left sideline for the touchdown.
The TigerScots improved to 4-0 on the season, and next up is Elgin at home in another league contest at 7 p.m.
