December 1, 1928 - September 30, 2011
Richard "Dick" Boldman, 82, passed away September 30, 2011,
at his home. He endured his final difficult days with good humor and
a tremendous amount of courage surrounded by his family. At his
request, there will be no formal service. Memorial contributions may be made
to the American Cancer Society or Walla Walla Community Hospice
through Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt, 1551 Dalles Military Road,
Walla Walla, Washington 99362.
Dick was born on December 1, 1928, in Walla Walla to Raymond and Nellie Hill Boldman.
He graduated in 1947 from Walla Walla High School, where he
lettered as a member of the varsity baseball team. Shortly after
graduation, he began his 37 year career working for Pacific
Northwest Bell/ATT, retiring in 1984. On February 12, 1949,
he married Joyce Watson at the Catherine Street home of his
parents in Walla Walla. Their 62 year marriage was a source of
great pride and admiration for their family and celebrated every
year with a special anniversary dinner and family gathering. An
avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, hunting with
the same group at the same campsite for over 40 years. He was
an accomplished pool player, winning several local tournaments
and also enjoyed playing golf in his earlier years. When his
family was young, they spent many summer days boating and
waterskiing at Strawberry Island and vacations at Priest Lake.
Dick and Joyce enjoyed camping with family and close friends,
mushrooming every Memorial Day weekend and several trips to
the beach, clamming and fishing. Two of their more memorable
trips were celebrating their 40th anniversary in Hawaii and a six
week long motor home trip to Alaska with lifelong friends, Mick
and Virginia Taylor. He was a lifetime member of the B.P.O.E.
Lodge #287 of Walla Walla and Tri-State Steelheaders.
In later years, Dick took great pleasure in family
gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
He was a wonderful grandfather who delighted
in and took great pride in hearing about all their adventures and
accomplishments. He especially loved seeing the grandbabies
and, even in his final days, their little faces brought a special light
to his eyes and smile to his face.
In addition to his wife, Joyce, at home, he is survived by his
daughter, Vicki (Bruce) Maughan and son, David Boldman all of
Walla Walla; son Mark (Joyce) Boldman of Pasco, Washington;
grandchildren: Steven (Andrea) Sundberg, Ryan (Michelle)
Block, Andy (Shannon) Block all of Walla Walla; Bill Boldman of
Richland, Washington; Angie Boldman of San Diego, California;
Dia Erpenbeck of Florence, Kentucky; and Lea Hanson of
Maple Valley, Washington; eleven great-grandchildren; his
sister, Laverne Lynn of Beaverton, Oregon; and several nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two
brothers: Robert Boldman and Larry Boldman.
A celebration of Dick's life will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 2011, at the home of Vicki and Bruce
Maughan, 538 Prospect Avenue in Walla Walla. All family and friends are invited and encouraged to bring a picture or special
