Information session set on free tutoring

Students at five schools in the city may qualify for extra help because of federal Title I requirements.

WALLA WALLA -- An information session will be held next week for families whose children qualify to receive free tutoring services through Walla Walla Public Schools.

The meeting is set for Oct. 12 at Garrison Middle School, 906 Chase St., from 4-6 p.m. The meeting is meant for families whose children attend Blue Ridge, Edison, Green Park and Sharpstein elementary schools, and Garrison Middle School, all Title I schools in need of improvement under federal guidelines set by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, or No Child Left Behind.

During the meeting, families will get to learn about the different tutoring providers available in the area, and sign up for services as long as eligibility guidelines are met.

The meeting is meant to educate families on free tutoring, called Supplemental Educational Services, available because their children attend Title I schools. Title I is a federal program that provides additional funds for low-income schools to improve reading and math.

Although all 10 district schools are in some level of needing improvement, not all district schools are Title I eligible.
